REYKJAVIK, the capital of Iceland, is a shining example of the breathtaking beauty the country is known for. Immaculately clean, this city showcases the Icelandic people’s pride and care for their island. When it comes to Iceland, the environment and landscape are at the forefront, and when you stare out over the still bay to the distant untouched mountains, you will understand why.

Everywhere you go in the city you’re reminded of the stunning sights the city offers. Gorgeous architecture like the Hallgrimskirkja Church, open and peaceful parks like Tjornin Pond, or even one-of-a-kind activities like the Magic Ice Bar are just a few of the best things to do in Reykjavik. Plus, the many shops, museums, and of course, the best restaurants in the country make for a great way to spend a day. The city is also a perfect central point, being a short drive from the biggest Icelandic attractions like the blue lagoon, lava fields, and dreamy waterfalls. Whether you’re stocking up for your outdoor adventure or checking out the many attractions, Reykjavik is a must when in Iceland!

1.) Sun Voyager Sculpture

 A striking tribute to hope and exploration, this Viking ship shaped structure is one of the city’s highlights. Looking out over the bay the stainless steel glistening in the sunlight is quite a sight to see.

Pro Tip- The still waters reflecting off the metal make for great photos.

2.) Perlan Museum 

Perched atop one of the highest points in Reykjavik, this museum showcases some of the incredible environments Iceland has to offer. With an observation deck perfect for looking out over the city, a planetarium, and even an indoor ice cave, there is something for everyone!

Pro Tip- Head here for a beautiful sunset over the city.

3.) Icelandic Phallological Museum

Without a doubt one of the most “interesting” museums you will ever go to. An entire museum dedicated to phalluses from all sorts of different species. Including many uhh… eye opening specimens. Who would’ve guessed a penis museum could be so informational 😂

Pro Tip- The cafe inside the museum is surprisingly good; who knew?

4.) Ingolfsgardur Lighthouse

A small, short, and stout lighthouse guarding the bay is a fun little stop near the heart of Reykjavik. The bright yellow structure is a captivating contrast to the background of the Icelandic wilderness. You might even see people catching some good sized fish!

Pro Tip- If you’re lucky you can spot some dolphins and other marine life in the harbor.

5.) Rainbow Street

Right in the heart of downtown Reykjavik, this vibrant and colorful path is the perfect place to take a sunny day stroll. With shops full of locally made products and delectable cafes, Rainbow Street is the place to shop no matter who you are. Plus the view leading straight to the church is something to behold. 

Pro Tip- Go in the morning to see the sun starting to shine on the street and church.

6.) Hallgrimskirkja Church

 A testament to Icelandic beauty, the largest church in Iceland is a true marvel of the city. Wings that extend out into the gardens and the pillard surface stretching into the sky. If you only have a short time in Reykjavik, make sure this cathedral is on your list of things to do!

Pro Tip- Head there early to beat the crowds.

7.) Magic Ice Bar

One of the most original places you will find in the city. Featuring mural like ice carvings, benches and tables made from ice, and colorful interesting drinks make this an absolute must when in Reykjavik! Oh and don’t worry about the cold, they provide a long thick jacket 👍

8.) Harpa Concert Hall

Another of Iceland’s breathtaking wonders, the Harpa Concert Hall is a piece of art itself. An entirely glass exterior reflecting the water off of its sleek sharp edges is just as spectacular as the performances that take place inside. Home to the Icelandic symphony orchestra, the Icelandic opera, and various music festivals make it an enchanting way to end your day!

Pro Tip- Check it out after the sun goes down to see the building colorfully lit up.

9.) Tjornin Pond

If you are looking for a quiet place to enjoy your morning coffee or a serene spot to watch the sunset, then this is the place for you. A peaceful park with flowers along the bridge and places to sit to watch the ducks and geese. Not to mention the surrounding colorful houses and churches.

Pro Tip- Check out the southern half of the park to see statues set up throughout.

10.) WW2 Ruins

History buffs this one is for you. In the forests south of the city center lay the remnants of a World War 2 air base. Walking through the vegetation covered craters where oil tanks used to be is an experience you won’t soon forget.

Pro Tip- Look for the scattered plaques showing what the ruins used to look like.

11.) Have A Bite At The Most Famous Hot Dog Stand In Iceland

While hot dogs are not the most luxurious food in the world, the dogs from the iconic Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur are the ideal meal for exploring the city. Almost a century old, this hot dog stand has served millions of people, and for good reason, as you won’t find a better hot dog on the island!

Pro Tip- Get everything on it for an authentic taste.

12.) Mt Esja

Only a short drive from Reykjavik, this day hike is ideal for great views of the city and the bay. Entirely uphill following a stream up the lush mountainside straight into the clouds is a fantastic taste of the sensational scenery Iceland has to offer!

Pro Tip- Bring a waterproof coat as the weather can change quickly.

13.) The Blue Lagoon Hotspring

 By far the most popular activity in the country, the sky blue waters of the Blue Lagoon are quite the spectacle. With water so blue it looks fake and the so called healing properties of the mineral rich mud the popularity is warranted. Just be sure to get there early to beat the large crowds.

Pro Tip- If you want to stay dry, you can walk the trails around the water for free.

14.) Rock Garden Galicany

Sitting on the salty waters is a peculiar yet welcoming display. Dozens apon dozens of carefully constructed rock pyramids right along the bay. The formations sticking out of the ground combined with the still ocean waters and the green mountains in the background, make for some great photo opportunities. 

Pro Tip- In the morning the background ocean waters are as still as glass.
